7/4/11 Last Day of editing!

Today was our last day of editing, however we remained calm throughout the day as we only had to touch up a couple of areas of our work.

The first of all was the music, after some constructive criticism from Mrs Fernandez we decided to change the sound track of our opening minute. We decided that it was too upbeat and did not really build enough tension and didn’t go very well with our shots. However we managed to use the first part of another soundtrack that suits are work, and we extremely pleased with our final piece of work. In addition we also made a slight change the tile at the end of the opening clip. Previously we had the title “Golden Boy” coming up in white; however we are now fading the gold into the title which in my opinion looks absolutely fantastic! All together it was a very successful day!

JI: 6/4/2011

This is our penultimate day until our deadline. We have just been over our film making a few last alterations and finishing off by adding in the titles. We feel we have now got our final product.

We've decided to add the title 'Starring Luca Forino' in the shot where the camera focuses on the old photo of him and his dad. We feel this will have an impact on the audience and hopefully try them to grasp the emotion. 'Produced by James Irwin' will appear in a running scene, we have added this here as there is not much action going on so the white title stands out epspecially as the shot has very dark lighting.

To gain some feedback we showed it to another student within the class who was really impressed with how it looked, and commented positively about the voice over, so with that we now feel we have possibly finished. We will spend tomorrow watching the footage over and over again just to make sure it’s to the best quality and that there isn’t any needed improvements.

JI: Final week!

We have reached the final week of our film opening production. This final week we have been spending every spare moment of our time within the editing rooms trying to get everything to its final product.

Within the last few days we have been putting all our footage down and playing around with it to get the transitions and all the editing fine tuned, which we now feel it is at now.

Yesterday we focused on the voice over, done by myself, and the non-digetic music we would be using in our opening. We wrote our script up while watching our footage to make sure the dialogue would correspond well along side the footage. We went into the sound booth to record our dialogue, however when we first recorded the voice over we had a few problems due to the dictaphone being to close to my mouth, and found there were some interferences within it, such as breathing. So that was something we had to consider the second time, however when we done it the second time it went well, and we have now uploaded it onto our edited footage, and it fits into the opening well.

With the music we had a look at a few previous examples that had been used in similar genres such as 'Eye of the Tiger' in Rocky.



We realised they all used quite up tempo beats to get across the fast pace aspect of the sport and the hard training. We liked this however we wanted to add another aspect into the music with a more classical song to represent the beauty of the sport. After looking through the sound mix CD we finally found two tracks which we felt worked great. Both fitted our initial idea, one being an up beat track and the other being more classical. We have used these at different points of our opening to show the contrast, and faded them in together which have worked really well.

These last two days will be doing the final touch ups to our opening and hopefully making it look the best it possibly can.

LF: 3 days to go!

Here is a list of the things we need to achieve by Thursday

• Import the voiceover on to the opening.
• Find an appropriate backing track which suits our style of opening.
• Tidy up a few shots as we feel they are slightly too long.
• Potentially make some iconic props stand out in colour.

LF: Music Ideas

This is the soundtrack to the fighter, I fell we could use something similar as I believe that it’s a bit too glamorous and American, as in our narrative the boxer has not reached the height of world championship level yet. So I feel if we can find something a bit less dramatic with a British twist to it I feel it could be perfect.

LF: 4/4/11 Update

We have continued to edit the opening to our film and have reduced the amount of footage new have to 2:14, however we still need to tidy up some aspects f the editing in order for it to be 2 minutes long. Furthermore we also added a new aspect to the opening in the form of a quote. We feel this will help to explain the storyline and grab the audience’s attention.

In addition we have also been searching for some types of classical music however we are not too sure weather to go for the more classical form of music, or use a more industrial British genre. However I am sure we will find the perfect type of music to tie in with our voiceover. Our script is nearly finished we just need to think of a couple more lines then we can record it!

LF: Rough Cut: Class Feedback

After showing the class our rough cut in class, we are very pleased with the feedback we received as the reflection on our work was positive. However we also gained an insight into what people liked and what they felt we could have improved on.

Firstly the shot’s which gained everyone’s attention and received the most credit was the POV shots of hitting the speed bag and the short fight scene. This is very encouraging as they were the shots we believe can gain the highest amount of marks. They class especially liked the camera work of the fight scene as it allowed the audience to feel involved. Furthermore one other aspect of feedback we were pleased with was the black and white effect. The response was they felt it created an authentic feel about our work. However we are thinking of trying to include some effects that change certain iconic props into colour such as the gloves.

One of the main advantages of showing the class the rough cut was to gain some feedback into what areas of our work they feel we need to improve on. For instance in the changing room scene at the start of the opening the individual shots are too long therefore we need to shorten them, or increase the cutting rate to keep the audience interested. Furthermore one other piece of constructive criticism we received was it was not totally clear who died for the funeral scene. However when we include our voice over the storyline will become a lot clearer.

Altogether the responses we received were good, and with the feedback we feel we can improve our opening to try and gain the highest grades.
